When you attend for a test of any kind you will be told how long you should expect to wait for the results. Please only call the Surgery after sufficient time has elapsed - you will find a list below of approximate times.
Our reception staff are not qualified to comment on results but can give them out if the doctor has had time to look at them and has left a clear comment. We would greatly appreciate if you could call us after 11:00 to get your results as mornings tend to be very busy. If you have additional queries it is best to discuss them with the doctor or nurse who initiated the test.
Please note that we do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection: we will only give out results to the person they relate to unless that person has given us prior permission for their release or if they are not capable of understanding them.
How long test results will take to come back
This is a rough guide:
Blood tests requested by the Surgery - 2 to 5 days
X-rays requested by the Surgery - 2 to 5 days
Hospital scans requested by the Surgery - 2 weeks
Tests organised directly by an hospital
If your test was requested by an hospital doctor, the result will be sent to them, not our Practice. The responsibility for ensuring a test result is received, interpreted and communicated to a patient lies with the hospital doctor who initiated the test. If you are expecting a test result to be communicated to you but have not heard, in the first instance you should contact the secretary for the hospital consultant whose care you are under. If you do not know which consultant this is, it may be written on any paperwork you were given by the hospital. If you are finding it difficult to identify your consultant, our reception staff may be able to help you.
